For the sake of full disclosure and so that I don’t have to field any more specific questions I’ve decided to relay the events that took place last Friday night. Please feel free to forward this information along to fellow FLUX patrons!
Let me preface this by thanking all of the patrons who have attended FLUX over the last 6 months. I’d also like to thank all the DJs & promoters who assisted us in keeping it going. It’s been a memorable journey to say the least.
At approximately 9:30pm on May 9th, I arrived at Seven Lounge to setup equipment for the night. Upon arriving I found a private party happening inside the venue. I spoke with the venue owner / manager to find out what exactly was going on. He stated to me that he’d booked a private party for the night and had notified Marcus (D~T~D Productions) that this was going to take place weeks prior. He stated that we could finish out the night once the hired DJ was done. I expressed my frustrations with the lack of communication that I received about the night and that I had DJs arriving from Boston and Providence momentarily. We had been doing this night for 6 months and were planning to finish up at the end of June. I contacted Marcus and asked him why I wasn’t informed. He stated that it had slipped his mind and that he didn’t think it would be an issue as the private party was planning to end at 11pm. I expressed my frustration to him about his lack of communication. Speaking further with the club owner / manager I found out that another private party was planned for another upcoming Friday night (June 13th). I explained that I was planning to have MO7S come out from Los Angeles that night. He stated that if he already received the deposit on the night there would be nothing he could do to reschedule. I was livid but I kept my composure.
At this point I decided to notify the DJs on the night (STEPPO & G NOTORIOUS) that the scheduling conflict was going to affect them and that they could choose not to attend if they weren’t already in the area. After speaking with both of them I found out that they were both very close to the venue. I asked them to show up so that I could at least compensate them and warned them that the night might not actually occur. When Steppo and G Notorious arrived I explained what was going on. At this point patrons started to arrive and I was concerned about canceling the event so late. I went back into the venue and spoke with the club manager about how soon we could get the event underway. He stated that the DJ was aware that we wanted to go on at 11pm and he was fine with it. I decided to continue on with the night even with our communication issues and scheduling conflict, as I was concerned about the already arriving patrons. I notified the DJs that we could cut our sets short and attempt to salvage the night. Both Steppo and G Notorious (gracious as they are) agreed that it was worth a shot. I began lugging equipment up to the DJ booth and began setting up. As 11pm rolled around the club manager / owner flagged me down from the DJ booth to talk. He asked me outside what I was planning to play. This annoyed me greatly as we had been doing the night for 6 months. I told him that we were planning to play a mixture of Dubstep, UK Garage, & Speed Garage. He asked if I could play “vocal house” or top-40 style remixes. I stated that I could not as I do not own any. He stated that it would be bad business for him to let us play as it would scare off the private party patrons who were “tipping well”. At this time we had approximately 10-15 people standing at the door looking confused. This is not a very good crowd, but our crowd usually shows up late. I told him that I would just go pack up my equipment, leave, and that it was “shitty”. I thanked everyone (a now growing number of FLUX attendees arriving at the door) for coming out and then went home. I called Marcus to notify him that FLUX would no longer be happening as I could not predict what nights would be booked for private events that would override our planned FLUX nights. I also stated that I was disappointed in his lack of communication and explained that if he had told me what was going on that I would’ve been able to cancel the event weeks ahead of time, saving time, energy, and money for all those involved.
Wrapping up: I’m deeply sorry for those of you who traveled to Worcester. I appreciate your support in the final weeks of FLUX. I’m going on a hiatus (permanent?) from managing events as I do not have people who I can count on for communication, for promotion, and for the big effort it takes to maintain attendance at a weekly event. This time that I’ll be gaining back will go into the on-going production of my upcoming releases and THUMP 6 which is now in the works. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
PLEASE NOTE: I AM NO LONGER ASSOCIATED WITH OR PROMOTE ANY EVENTS THAT OCCUR AT SEVEN LOUNGE IN WORCESTER.
